Title: Block
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Hey, a merc's gotta do what a merc's gotta do to keep food in his stomach and heat sinks in his rifle.
Characters: Zaeed Massani
Pairings: None
Word Count: 1,193
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: *facepalm* So life's finally stopped kicking my ass enough that I could finish the vignette languishing half-written on my hard drive for eight months. The chances of me finishing the Downtime series before ME3 is released is slim to none, but I'm officially at the halfway point now, so I consider that a win. Also, Zaeed is a really uncooperative bastard. Also, all the original names I used here were carefully chosen for my own amusement, but if you can guess my reasoning for them, you get a cookie!

It's not like mercs didn't like bragging about their exploits, anyway. He'd just found a way to turn that into credits. )
So Zaeed's being an uncooperative bastard about his entry for the Downtime series. I got two paragraphs written before the smarmy ass lit up a cigar, sat back, and told me to fuck off. Jack, at least, was simply resistant to the idea of showing a side that wasn't Tough Raging Psycho Bitch; Zaeed is just being contrary and a pain in my ass.

...Christ, I have video game characters for muses who live in my head. Fuck but I am a therapist's goldmine.

On the bright side, while Zaeed is being an ass, I've taken the time to finalize what I want to do with the rest of the series - well, mostly. Joker's only being grudgingly helpful and my Mordin muse is flat out gone so I've had to move his piece down to the twelve spot, but Garrus, Grunt, Samara, and Thane are at least cooperating.

Still, I think I'm going to just let this writer's block run its course and do something not related to ME to give myself a break. So. What to do that isn't yardwork.

Star Wars fanfiction? Yeah, let's start with that.
Title: Graphite
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Poetry was for getting her thoughts out of her head. Drawing was for getting out her memories: the good, the bad, and even the almost forgotten.
Characters: Jack
Pairings: None
Word Count: 1,317
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: Sixth in the Downtime series. So this ended up a lot more angsty than I intended; Jack's a really messed up girl. Also, updates in the Downtime series are going to be much farther in between – my summer's getting a lot busier and I'm still beating back my writer's block. Regardless, I am going to do my damnedest to see this series through to the end!

She was pretty sure she'd been way overcharged for her supplies, but Hell, where else was she going to find a halfway decent art store? )
Title: Gifts
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG
Summary: Organics do not think logically. They still attempt to understand regardless.
Characters: Legion
Pairings: None. (Although if you squint and tilt your head you could see Garrus/FemShep, I guess.)
Word Count: 1,518
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: Fifth in the Downtime series. I have no idea what the hell this is. I had absolutely no idea what to do with Legion so I just started writing and it exploded into a monster and I'm praying to God I haven't made a fool of myself and produced something terrible. At least it's finished. Oh thank God it's finished. I'm never writing from the perspective of a synthetic life form again. I'm going to go hide in a corner now.

They have concluded that Shepard-Commander is eccentric by most organic standards. )
Title: Sound
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG
Summary: Morning routine was sacrosanct and his only window of sweet, blessed normalcy on a ship full of crazies entrusted with ensuring the survival of the human race.
Characters: Jacob Taylor
Pairings: None
Word Count: 914
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: Fourth in the Downtime series. I admit I'm vastly more comfortable writing for female characters, but I'm trying to change that, so trying to get into Jacob's head was a good exercise. While I don't count myself a Jacob fan, I do like him and think that the Normandy's Only Sane Man deserves a little more positive attention from the fandom. Also, it's been a really long time since my middle school music lessons, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes.

Breakfast on the Normandy was pretty tame, at least compared to the feeding frenzy that was post-mission chow time. )
Title: Ductwork
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG
Summary: The best thing about the Normandy's system of ventilation and maintenance shafts as compared to a museum's was the complete and utter lack of dust.
Characters: Kasumi Goto
Pairings: None
Word Count: 881
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: Third in the Downtime series. I’ve always loved rogue-like characters and Kasumi ended up being such a blast to write. Plus in my personal head canon, she, Tali, and my FemShep end up forming an unholy triumvirate of giggling girlish glee. The port observatory has been officially declared Enemy Territory by the male crewmembers.

So Cerberus had gone a little overboard with the whole monitoring devices thing. )
I finished the Legion piece for the "Downtime" series Monday and holy God did it turn into a monster. Easily twice as long as the other stories I've already got written, and I'm hoping it'll remain the longest. (I much prefer to write short and sweet. I love conveying a whole story and world in as few words as possible. Or in just dialogue.)

Aaaand I think I have some inspiration for Mordin's piece now. Awesome.

My original plan was to write one installment in the "Downtime" series a day (with the idea to post an installment every two to three days, so I can go back and edit them with fresh eyes), but I ended up taking yesterday off to recharge. Going to get to work on Jack's bit later this evening and tomorrow I'll work Zaeed's (which I think might end up the most humorous in the series, because I had two equally hilarious possibilities for Zaeed, but went with one I thought I could make much more plausible while retaining some silly bits). Day after that is Garrus's turn, then Grunt or Samara (which ever one I finalize first), then Mordin, Thane (who I still don't have a damn idea for - much as I like Thane, I just can't get into his head easily), Joker, and finally the Shepard piece, which, now that I think about it, might end up as long or longer than the Legion piece.

I'll likely post Kasumi's installment tomorrow or Friday, as I still need to go over it for edits; Jacob's will follow Sunday or Monday. In the meantime, time for a little fun before I need to struggle with the hardest part of each installment: starting the son of a bitch.

Title: Home
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG
Summary: Insomnia was annoying at the best of times, but Tali had found that letting her mind wander when sleep eluded her was both oddly cathartic and productive.
Characters: Tali'Zorah
Pairings: None
Word Count: 898
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just playing in their sandbox.
A/N: Second in the Downtime series. Tali is my most favorite squadmate (right up there with Garrus), so I was especially nervous while writing this because I really wanted to do Tali justice. Turned out a touch more angsty than I intended, but it didn't end up taking over, so I'm content with that.

Ships should not be this quiet. It just wasn't right. )
Title: Indulgences
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG-13 (barely)
Summary: Even the ship's ranking Cerberus officer would occasionally take the time to indulge in some rest and relaxation. Not that she'd tell anyone.
Characters: Miranda Lawson
Pairings: None
Word Count: 629
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: For the prompt "Miranda, downtime" at [livejournal.com profile] me_challenge. First in the Downtime series (oh God what I have done to myself). As I've mentioned before, I don't consider myself a Miranda fan, but I ended up having fun writing this anyway.

Title: Widow
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG
Summary: Shepard was getting better about her rather unhealthy attachment to her sniper rifles, but this latest acquisition was definitely going to end up making her regress.
Characters: FemShep, Garrus Vakarian, Jacob Taylor
Pairings: Garrus/FemShep (if you squint and tilt your head to one side)
Word Count: 642
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: For the prompt "what a beauty" at [livejournal.com profile] me_challenge. So I love playing an infiltrator, because sniping is glorious. And I love my Shepard - for background, she's Spacer/War Hero, and pretty heavily Paragon, but still with quite a few Renegade moments. She's fun.

Boom, headshot! )
Title: Manipulation
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dt_maxwell (DT)
Rating: PG-13 (for Jack's mouth)
Summary: Shepard easily ranked as the goodiest two-shoes in the galaxy. She was also a master at getting people to do whatever the hell it was she wanted - and making them like it, too.
Characters: Jack, FemShep, Kasumi Goto
Pairings: None
Word Count: 329
Disclaimer: Mass Effect and all related characters and concepts belong to Bioware; I'm just having fun in their sandbox.
A/N: For the prompt "spa day" at [livejournal.com profile] me_challenge. My first fanfic in a very long time; Jack is absuredly fun to write, however, and I admit part of that is because writing her dialogue comes very easily. *coughs* Let's just say that while in public I can be as calm and polite as needed, when I get riled up I live up to the nickname Dad gave me of "Chief Petty Officer."

Sooooo I seem to be writing fanfic again.

I blame [livejournal.com profile] me_challenge. I'm a long-time lurker both there and at [livejournal.com profile] masseffect, so I see the alerts about the Weekly Insanity Round going up and it's like, "Hey, drabbles!" so I scurry over to the challenge comm and read and giggle and coo and aww and everything else. Nothing out of the ordinary.

But the week before last, I really, really liked one of the prompts, and decided to write something for it, and it felt awesome. And then I decided to post them on FanFiction.Net, hive of scum and villainy that it is.

And then last week I filled out two more prompts. I've posted them at the Pit of Voles now, too.

You can probably see where this is going.

I will probably do another prompt for this week's Insanity Round, but in the meantime, I've been writing more fic. On my own time. I haven't done that shit in years.

Y'see, one of the prompts I did for last week was "Miranda, downtime," so I wrote a quick little ficlet about Miranda in her off-duty hours, and while I'm not normally much of a Miranda fan, I do not actively dislike her, and I found myself really liking seeing Miss Cerberus let her hair down, as it were. And then a few reviewers said, "Hey, this is good!" And I blushed, because holy crap people apparently like my oddball ideas. "Will you continue this?" they asked, and I shook my head because Lord, Miranda was okay, but I wasn't going to spend all my damn time writing about her. "No, no, we mean continue this and use the other squadmates. And Joker, can't forget Joker," they said.

Open mouth.

Close mouth.

Tilt head to one side.

Look down.

Oh, hey there little plot bunny, aren't you just the cutest-

Aw, crap.

So. Besides Miranda, I've written similar ficlets starring Tali, Kasumi, and Jacob, which I will be posting over the next few days as I don't want to post them all in one lump. I have ideas outlined for Legion, Jack, Zaeed, Garrus, and my FemShep (and her piece will be posted last), and still need to figure out what the hell I'm going to do for Grunt, Mordin, Samara, Thane, and Joker. I'm currently working on the Legion fic, or at least trying to, because son of a bitch how the hell am I supposed to write in the third person limited about a gestalt-consciousness of some 1,000 individual programs all living in one synthetic body?

Sigh. I'll figure something out, I guess.

Can't believe I'm even doing this, but the bunnies and muses haven't been this active in months. I'll take what I can get.

(P.S. Would, um, anyone like me to post my little ficlets here rather than have to swim through the landfill that's FF.Net?)
